As we approached remembrance day, we remembered and honoured the sacrifices of past generations – those who served in our nation’s wars. It is not just a day to commemorate those who serve and have served, but a time to value the contributions that the military and civilians make to our society.
As Retired Lieutenant-General Michel Maisonneuve described it to a Macdonald-Laurier Institute in November 2025, the armed forces are also a diplomatic and nation-building institution.
We would do well to reflect on the little ways in which we can honour veterans and the armed forces, and the value that things like national service (in the military, or other civic institutions) could do for character and skill formation, and civic pride alike.
Our Voices that Inspire series celebrates those rare voices who speak difficult truths with courage, grace, and eloquence. And in this month of remembrance — amid geopolitical upheaval and shifting balances of power — there was no better moment to reflect on Canada’s place in the world: our reputation, our alliances, and our capacity for leadership and defence.
Michel lent his voice and decades of experience to these questions in conversation with Brian Crowley. We are grateful for veterans and leaders like him.
