At the Macdonald-Laurier Institute’s Rethinking Higher Education conference, held in Ottawa from Aug. 28-29, 2025, Michael Shires, who served as chief of staff for the University of Austin (UATX), described the process of launching the university. Michael works with the America First Policy Institute, and has been instrumental in the Trump Administration’s many Higher Ed reforms.
